Don’t Be a Scrooge… A Brighter Future Awaits
Last week, I and my colleague, Maria Diecidue, had the pleasure of visiting with Rich Meeusen, CEO of Badger Meter and Chairman of The Water Council. We discussed his legacy in light of the prediction by the 2030 Water Resource Group that demand for water will exceed supply by 40 percent in 2030:
“When I look at that 2030 Report, it scares the heck out of me,” says Meeusen. “But I think the world can change its behavior towards water. Just as Scrooge (in the Christmas Carol) changed his behavior toward Christmas, I think we can put ourselves on a path where the dire predictions of that report don’t come true.
“Right now, a child dies every 20 seconds due to problems with water. I don’t want to live in a world where a child dies every 10 seconds. That would be an abomination.”
Meeusen responded to what he saw happening in water by creating The Water Council, which just launched the freely accessible Global Water Port database to connect government and industry with researchers and IP. The Water Council also houses the North American office for the Alliance for Water Stewardship, which certifies firms on the AWS Standard for Water Stewardship.
While 2030 is still 14 years off, what Meeusen started with the support of public and private partners, is now a model for water clusters around the globe. It is also the 2015 recipient of the Excellence in Technology Based Economic Development (TBED) “Improving Competitiveness of Existing Industries” Award, given by the State Science & Technology Institute’s (SSTI).
