WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
Congratulations to our new Ambassadors and say “hello” to our newest members:
Lanny Call Jr (Michigan), Carlos Menor Salazar (Illinois), Ron Richards (Illinois), Annette Wisniewski (Illinois), Kathy Paczynski (Illinois), Ruvarangu Mberi (Zimbabwe), Eileen Grochowski (Illinois), Ilana Cohen (Illinois), John Filippo (Illinois)
NEWS WORTH SHARING: Forest fires can affect lakes and other water bodies.
WHO TO KNOW: Meet the passionate lake lovers at the Green Drinks gathering for Save Our Lake Life, learning how to rid three interconnected lakes of muck. The problem has reduced the oxygen level resulting in about 1,000 dead fish washing up on the shores. Members signed a petition for the county to allocate American Rescue Plan Act funds for the demonstration project.
THIS WEEK’S POLL:
A fun poll with great comments demonstrating the love of many different water sports or activities. What water sports do you find most interesting?
Water Skiing - 28%
Sailboat sailing or racing - 0%
Swimming - 28%
Diving all forms - 28%
Other please comment - 14%
Love the comments: Sailing, diving and simply exploring. Exploring areas that have a significant water presence can be mesmerizing. Great thought! Watching the beaty of the lake in the morning and swimming in Lake Tanganyika. Enjoy the video included with the Lake Tanganyika comment. https://youtu.be/aPdqvpm6vMY Must add fishing! I will add I love being on the lake in the early morning!! The acts of just being at a water fall, a lake and on the shore watching the waves. Watching a sunset over the water. Yes, this can take your breath away!!
THE WONDER OF WATER: Wastewater treatment plants, also called water reclamation plants, are essential for protecting our water environment. Touring a wastewater facility, as Muganuzi Adonis did, is a fascinating way to learn how pollutants are removed to keep our waters clean.
TECH TALK: “Forever chemicals,” PFAS have become a regulatory issue, as litigation mixes with state and federal rulemaking. Travis Loop discusses these issues and the effect on permitting of a facility on the Cape Fear River with Elizabeth Biser, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, and Geoff Gisler, Program Director at the Southern Environmental Law Center.
FUN WITH WATER: Check out the U.S. winners of the 2023 Stockholm Junior Water Prize and their fascinating projects. It’s great to see our next generation solving water challenges.
STORMWATER SOLUTIONS: The Water Environment Federation published Rainfall to Results: The Future of Stormwater, which outlines 7 objectives to solve the increasing challenges on stormwater systems.
